Henrik Ertner says: In Duhok I met a young man who is Yazidi. For security reasons, we call him Aziz. He told me: "I fled as soon as I heard that the Islamic State forces were coming.
Together with thousands of others, I climbed the mountain (Mount Sinjar, ed.). I was on the mountain for seven days. I found nothing to eat or drink, except dew drops on the grass.
I saw children dying in front of my eyes. Together with others, I found a way down the mountain and walked and walked towards the Syrian border, where I crossed over and got help. After I recovered, I hiked all the way back to Iraq and finally made it to Duhok."
Aziz found Christians who provided help to everyone, regardless of ethnic or religious background, and he wanted to get to know the Jesus that Christians talked about as the reason why they didn't just help their own. Now he works with the church to help other displaced people and tell them about Jesus.
Aziz had become a Christian, but you could tell that he was still affected by his experiences during the summer, when he was among the thousands of Yazidis displaced by the Islamic State from the Nineveh Plain.
