The government and media report 56 dead and 21 missing, with over 12,000 families and 40,000 people affected, including thousands of displaced people.
There are noticeable consequences in the provinces of North, East, West, Central, North-Central, North-West, Sabaragamuwa and Uva, where houses, workplaces, and access to transportation and electricity have been severely disrupted.
Churches in several of these areas report that many Christian families have been displaced and some church buildings have been affected by flooding and storms. Many of them work in poor areas where they risk opposition from the local community. This crisis has now exacerbated their challenges further.
What can you do?
To meet this need, Danish European Mission's partner, the Evangelical Alliance, is launching a relief effort to support 500 pastors and Christian workers who are directly affected or displaced.
Each emergency aid package is worth 675 DKK and contains vital support for a pastor and his household, enabling them to get practical in the midst of challenges and continue to serve their congregations and communities.
The emergency assistance package costs 675 DKK and includes:
Food and dry rations
Safe drinking water
Hygiene and sanitary products
● Basic medicine
Small cash grants for temporary shelter, transportation or emergency repairs
All aid will be delivered through our established national network of churches and partner organizations to ensure a timely, accountable and needs-based distribution that is consistent with recognized humanitarian standards.
