Emergency aid for Christians at risk of harassment, discrimination and persecution

Iraqi Christians on the run receive emergency aid

Iraqi Christians experienced harsh persecution at the end of 2010, when a church in Baghdad was attacked and 52 Christians were killed. Many Iraqi Christians are fleeing Iraq, and through the Danish European Mission, several have received emergency aid.

In collaboration with a local church, our partner has distributed relief packs, heaters, blankets, kerosene and encouraging Christian literature to Iraqi Christians fleeing Iraq.

Many have left their jobs or businesses in Iraq and are now without a source of income. Thank you to everyone who has encouraged the persecuted Iraqi Christians in this way.

The background to the flight of Iraqi Christians is harsh. The Danish European Mission's partner tells of an Iraqi Christian who had arrived in Jordan a few days earlier. While he was still in Baghdad, he received many verbal and written threats. One of his daughters was kidnapped and returned the next day with the message: 'As you can see, we can reach you and we can hurt you, so get out of here now. They burned his shop and threw a decapitated chicken at his front door. All to get him to leave immediately.

Eventually it became too much and he took his daughters, his wife and his elderly father and left for Jordan. They left everything behind... He told the story in tears, but he is grateful to at least have his wife, children and father safe with him."

Since the early 1990s, an estimated half a million Christians like this man and his family have fled or emigrated from Iraq. Many have traveled to Syria, Jordan or the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq. It is people like these who are now receiving relief in the form of food, warm blankets, heaters and kerosene, as well as encouraging Christian literature and Bibles.

Encouraging Christian literature is distributed.
