Pastor Ilmurad Nurliev

Pastor Ilmurad Nurliev was sentenced to four years in prison in 2010 on charges of "causing significant loss to the citizen". The background was that the members of his congregation paid tithes, which is a biblical principle where 10 percent of one's income is paid to the church or church work. The Turkmen authorities considered this to be cheating, and Pastor Ilmurad Nurliev was imprisoned.

Pastor Ilmurad Nurliev was pardoned on February 18, 2012 on the occasion of Turkmenistan's Flag Day on February 19. He served 1½ years of his sentence before the pardon.

During his imprisonment, Danish European Mission donors managed to support Pastor Ilmurad Nurliev with food and clothing in prison, and Danish European Mission supporters sent letters of encouragement to him in prison and letters of appeal to the Turkmen state.
