Meriam Yahya Ibrahim

The Sudanese authorities believed Meriam Ibrahim had a Muslim background, despite the fact that her mother had raised her in the Christian faith. When she later married a Christian man, the state intervened. Meriam was arrested on February 17, 2014, and was sentenced to death and 100 lashes for apostasy and fornication for marrying a Christian man. Throughout the process, she was pregnant with her second child, due at the end of May 2014.

Meriam ended up giving birth to a baby girl while she was in prison in very poor conditions and wearing an ankle bracelet.

After intense international pressure, Mariam was released and acquitted on June 23, 2014, but already on June 24 she was detained as she was leaving the country with her family. On June 26, she was released again and shortly afterwards Meriam and her family managed to travel to safety in Italy

During the trial and imprisonment, Danish European Mission readers prayed for Meriam and her family. Letters of appeal were also sent to the Sudanese president and letters of encouragement were sent to Meriam in prison.
