De sudanesiske myndighder mente Meriam Ibrahim havde muslimsk baggrund, til trods for at hende mor havde opdraget hende i den kristne tro. Da hun senere giftede sig med en kristen mand, greb staten ind. Meriam blev arresteret den 17. februar 2014, og blev idømt dødsstraf og 100 piskeslag for frafald fra Islam og for utugt, da hun havde giftet sig med en kristen mand. Under hele forløbet var hun gravid med sit andet barn, og havde termin i slutningen af maj 2014.
Meriam endte med at føde en lille pige, mens hun var i fængslet under meget kummerlige forhold og iført fodlænke.
Efter intensivt internationalt pres blev Mariam den 23. juni 2014 løsladt og frikendt, men allerede den 24 juni blev hun tilbageholdt, da hun var på vej ud af landet med hendes familie. Den 26. juni blev hun igen løsladt, og kort tid efter lykkes det Meriam og hendes familie at rejse i sikkerhed i Italien
Under retsagen og fængslingen bad Dansk Europamissions læsere for Meriam og hendes familie. Appelbreve blev også sendt til den sudanesisk præsident og opmuntringsbreve blev sendt til Meriam i fængslet.
