Kulen, his wife Vara, their daughters Viveka and Dinah and the son Pragash had been a part of Zion Church i Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka since 1999. Kulen works as a driver for the local authorities and the family used to live primarily from his salary.

One of the daughters suffered minor injuries to her leg, but after treatment she is now back home. The youngest daughter was hit by bomb fragments lodged in her stomach and had to fight for her life in the emergency room. Doctors had to remove her gallbladder in a complicated operation. Sadly, she died a few months later from the complications.
Karuna was the only one to walk free. He now faced the difficult task of taking care of his family, who in addition to the physical damages He was also deeply traumatized and grieving the loss of his youngest daughter.
