Kulen, his wife Vara, their daughters Viveka and Dinah and the son Pragash had been a part of Zion Church i Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka since 1999. Kulen works as a driver for the local authorities and the family used to live primarily from his salary.

Karuna, his wife Sumathy and their daughters lived through A similar tragedy. The parents are both unskilled laborers. Karuna works in transportation for a nearby store. Sumathyhas a part-time job as a domestic worker. Like so many others, they attended the fateful Easter service in 2019. Karuna was the only one to escape unscathed.
Sumathy was seriously injured by fragments from the bomb that are still lodged in her body. It is planthat she shall have operated on a metal plate in in her arm, but the doctors are unsure about the procedure as she is also diabetic. They fear the surgery will not go well, but there is nothing else they can do.
One of the daughters suffered minor injuries to her leg, but after treatment she is now back home. The youngest daughter was hit by bomb fragments lodged in her stomach and had to fight for her life in the emergency room. Doctors had to remove her gallbladder in a complicated operation. Sadly, she died a few months later from the complications.
Karuna was the only one to walk free. He now faced the difficult task of taking care of his family, who in addition to the physical damages He was also deeply traumatized and grieving the loss of his youngest daughter. Karuna himself was so psychologically affected that he could no longer do his job.
