No one is safe in North Korea
Atrocities continue in North Korea under new leader Kim Jong-un. In late 2013, Jong-un had his uncle Jang Song-thaek assassinated, showing that he is not shaking hands when it comes to maintaining power. But it also means that no one is safe, no matter how high up they are in the regime.
The prison camps
The prison camps, which the Danish European Mission has often written about, unfortunately still exist and continue to make life hell on earth for thousands of North Korean prisoners. There are satellite images that can document their existence, and in addition, many have escaped and have been able to testify to the conditions. Murder, torture, rape, starvation and executions are part of the harsh reality of North Korea's prison camps, which is why it is important that we help those who escape from a country that continues to oppress its people.
The refugees
In 2013, the Danish European Mission supported 17 refugees to find freedom in third countries. Most of these refugees do not know Jesus, but during their flight they encounter God's love through Christian missionaries in China before making the perilous journey through Southeast Asia.
Death penalty and humiliation
It is important to help refugees because they are in danger of being sent back to North Korea if they are discovered by the Chinese authorities who, regardless of what might happen to them in North Korea, send them back into the hands of the regime. North Korean refugees in China are considered to be "illegal economic immigrants" and are therefore summarily sent back. The consequences of repatriation can be the death penalty or a life sentence and many other terrible humiliations.
The work of helping refugees from North Korea is extremely sensitive. All those we have helped in 2013 through our partner have made it safely out of the dangerous areas. We thank God for His protection during these actions.
Food, medicine and clothing
In addition, we have sent support for food, medicine and clothing so that the underground church in North Korea can survive despite the terrible conditions in the country. Danish European Mission thanks our donors for their faithful support of this important work.
