NB: This campaign has ended. Phase two of the campaign will begin at the end of March 2014.

Briefly about the case

On March 9, 2010, authorities sentenced Tohar Haydarov to 10 years in prison for drug possession, for "illegal sale of narcotics or psychotropic drugs in large quantities". He was only 27 years old at the time.

His fellow believers insist that the charges are fabricated and are a punishment for his church activities. According to church members, he is "a man with a clear conscience and an honest Christian".

They also stated in the second complaint to the Supreme Court that two of the official witnesses used in the search of Haydarov's home did not live in the town of Karshi, as stated in the case file. The third witness, who according to official records was Haydarov's neighbor, did not live at all at the address that was officially stated. His fellow Christians also said that when they spoke to him, he told them that he had been pressured to sign the official records of the search. However, the witness was afraid to testify in court.

In 2012, Tohar is still in a labor camp where he is forced to work with bricks. It is doubtful that he will be allowed to read the Bible. Tohar's case has been appealed twice - without the verdict being overturned.

Write the letter

I don't know if Tohar had wishes and dreams for the future when he was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the age of just 27. I certainly remember having them when I was 27. Like so many others, he probably did too, and he needs all the strength he can get to stand strong in faith, be of good courage and have the boldness to witness to Jesus in prison.

Let us in Danmark, together with Christians around the world, let Tohar experience what Peter in the early church experienced in prison: While Peter was heavily guarded in prison, the congregation prayed fervently and persistently for him. (Acts 12:5)

If you wish to write a letter yourself, in English or Russian, please do not mention the Danish European Mission and avoid criticizing the authorities.

A letter to Tohar Haydarov means encouragement for him - if the letters get through.  There is a real risk that the letters will be caught by the censors in prison.  But it could mean that prison staff and management are made aware that Tohar Haydarov is not just another inmate, but a prisoner that many people in many countries know about. This can raise awareness of his case and hopefully make the authorities question whether it was right to imprison Tohar.
