There are currently 152 Y's Men clubs in Danmark supporting social and humanitarian projects. In 2010 the clubs are raising funds for a project in Albania and for the Danish European Mission's sewing school project in Pakistan. Dansk Europamission has asked the regional leader of Y's Men Region Danmark in 2010, Knud Erik Lykke, why and how Y's Men Region Danmark in 2010 will raise money for the sewing school project in Pakistan.

Why has Y's Men chosen to support sewing schools in 2010?

We have a great desire to support projects in third world countries, and this is where we need to show that we are doing something in Y's Men. We have great respect for what you do as a YMCA. The needs in the world are incredibly great, and even though our money may seem like a small stream, this small stream can turn into a big river. Although the help may seem like a drop in the ocean, nothing would happen if it didn't start with a drop.

We want to make a difference. We have chosen to fundraise for the sewing school project because it enables Pakistani girls to get an education and enable them to support themselves and their families and thus have a good life. If we can help just one person, it's a good deed, but when many others besides us send money to this project, many girls can be helped on an annual basis.

How do Y's Men raise money to set up sewing schools?

Many clubs run thrift shops and organize flea markets and bike sponsored races. Some sell raffle tickets, telegrams and even ties with our logo. The sky's the limit, but for the most part, most funds are raised through flea markets and thrift stores. It's important for us to say that it's not money we take out of our own pockets, but it's money that our members work hard to raise.
