Maryam sent back to Evin prison in Iran

Maryam Naghash Zargaran (also known as 'Nasim') returned to the women's wing of Evin prison on Monday, June 27. The prosecutor had refused to extend her temporary release, which she had been granted in order to receive medical attention.

When the prosecutor threatened to seize the family home as payment for the 350 million Iranian tomans (around $650,000) that had been put up as collateral for her exit permit, Maryam chose to return to prison.

Maryam was temporarily released from Evin prison for medical reasons on June 6, following a hunger strike that she had begun on May 26. Family and friends are grateful that Maryam received medical attention and the opportunity to spend precious time at home. Her health had improved by the time she went back to prison.

Maryam, a former Muslim, has been detained since January 15, 2013 and was sentenced to four years in prison in July 2013 for her participation in services in underground churches in Iran, consisting of Muslim converts to the Christian faith. At the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, she was convicted of "Propaganda against the Islamic regime and undermining state security".

Pray for her health, for access to medical care when needed, and for her early release.
