Imprisoned convert Tohar needs a letter from YOU

Tohar was unjustly sentenced to ten years in prison in 2010 at the age of 27 for possessing and selling drugs. Most 27-year-olds may have dreams of getting married, starting a family and achieving many goals in life. However, Tohar has spent the last 4 years in prison for his faith.

Tohar has always maintained his innocence and reliable sources say the charges are fabricated to give the Uzbek authorities a pretext to imprison him. He has a reputation as "a man with a clear conscience and an honest Christian".

Conversion from Islam - the real reason?

Just before Tohar was arrested, he converted from Islam to Christianity and became part of a congregation that faces discrimination and abuse from the authorities. The authorities perceive conversion from Islam as a threat to the typical definition of national Uzbek Muslim identity as Tohar, through his conversion, becomes an example that it is possible to be Uzbek and Christian at the same time.

The 2012 campaign worked

In October 2012, Danish European Mission asked our appeal friends to send a message of encouragement to this young man. Tohar is still in a labor camp, but whereas before he was forced to do heavy bricklaying, he has now been given light cleaning work as his health could not cope with the hard physical labor.

Letters show Uzbekistan that many know Tohar

The letters of encouragement show the authorities that many people around the world know Tohar, which may help him to avoid doing strenuous physical work. The feedback from Uzbekistan is that the letters are useful and that Tohar is happy with them.

It is also reported that the prison director is angry about all the letters that are still being sent, which is why we want to keep up the pressure. It is unknown whether Tohar has access to read the Bible. His case has been appealed twice without the conviction being overturned, despite new evidence of his innocence.

In our experience, such encouraging greetings also mean a lot to the persecuted and give them a good opportunity to tell their fellow prisoners about their faith.
