Currently, several cities in Iran are witnessing large demonstrations against the regime. The protests started when merchants in Tehran's bazaar closed their shops in frustration over sharply declining purchasing power, but they have quickly spread to other cities and evolved with slogans of regime change.
Prayer is important in this particular situation. Since the 1990s, there have been regular large demonstrations against the clerical regime in Iran, all of which have been brutally suppressed. The police and military have remained loyal to the regime during previous protests.
So when Iranians take to the streets, they know from experience what the consequences can be. Not only that the police physically crack down on protesters, but also that they risk long prison sentences for publicly expressing their frustrations. And Iranian prisons are not as pleasant as Danish prisons, to say the least.
We must pray for the protesters, but also for the police and the country's political leadership - that they make decisions for the good of the people.
During this time, we can pray for convert Christians in Iran who are reaching out and spreading the message of Jesus' love, even in these days.
Iranian Christian converts are used to risk and persecution. They cannot legally meet in church buildings, but must meet in secret.
Currently, more than 10 Iranian Christians are serving prison sentences. Danish European Mission's intercessors and donors are helping to provide them and their families with legal aid and practical support.
In addition, since 2011, donors to the Danish European Mission have ensured that more than 225,000 copies of the New Testament have been smuggled into Iran and introduced into neighboring countries where Iranians live.
