The picture shows a refugee family from the Hitteen refugee camp in Jordan.
Then the war came and she was terrified by the sound of shells, bombardment and gunfire. It became difficult to get water and food. She and her husband decided to flee to the neighboring village (Nashabiyeh) where her sister lived. As they were leaving, a bomb hit and killed her husband, who was ripped apart right in front of her eyes. There was nothing she could do because the bombing continued and she was beside herself.
With great difficulty, and with the help of some others who were also on the run, she made it to her sister's house. They then decided to move on to Jordan. Umm Tawfiq began the journey with her sister and her children. Just before they arrived at the border, a fierce gun battle broke out and her sister and all her children were killed. Umm Tawfiq herself was shot in the leg.
She was helped by the Jordanian army to cross the border and the 70-year-old woman's life is now very difficult. She has really had to go through a lot.
During a visit to Jordan in October, I saw several examples of refugees from Syria who had lost limbs. We received the above report from our partner in Jordan.
