Christians attacked in Egypt

On Sunday, October 9, 2011, around 1000 Coptic Christians gathered in Egypt's capital Cairo to demonstrate against the recent burning of two churches and the escalation of violent attacks on the country's Christians. These attacks by Muslim groups have worsened - apparently with the approval of the regime - since former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February 2011.

On Sunday, an estimated 26 Christians lost their lives and hundreds were injured during the demonstration. The attacks began late Sunday afternoon when the army fired into the crowd of protesters and drove into the crowd. Witnesses to the demonstration report that the attack left body parts scattered at the scene.

Historically, there were Christians in Egypt before the establishment of Islam. Therefore, it is highly offensive that Christians are attacked by Muslim extremists. "In my opinion, this violence against innocent Christians shows that not everyone has a sincere desire for democracy in Egypt, but rather works to give the religion Islam more power in Egypt. Therefore, we should probably expect more attacks on Christian minorities in the country. And for the same reason, it's important that the world's politicians put pressure on the Egyptian government in solidarity with the Christian minority," says Henrik Due Jensen, Project Manager at the Danish European Mission.
