What is truth?

The question is a quote from Pilate's questioning of Jesus. For what is truth and where does it come from? We often hear that truth comes from children and drunk people, and perhaps it is true that parts of truth come from these groups. But truth must be something more concrete than that if I am to build my life on it.

When I attended a secret conference in March with many persecuted Christians, the moderator said: "We are one church under one God. We must bring truth to each other and to our country."

Pious as I was, I nodded and thought - the man is right. And I could see that several people in the room agreed. But what is meant by truth? Does anyone have a definition of truth? The dictionary, parents, teachers and environmentalists all have a version of truth that they want to convey.

But there is something about the truth conveyed at the conference that makes you wonder. The truth about Jesus. That truth changes people's lives and makes them willing to sacrifice everything for this one thing. To believe in Jesus as the truth. This characterizes the persecuted church to a great extent. They do not succumb to falsehood and to oppression, because they have a truth to cling to. The truth of Jesus that they must believe in. They choose to believe in one truth and they choose to follow that truth - whatever the cost.

Jesus himself says in John 14:16 that he is the truth. But what do you think? Do you believe that this is the truth?

At the Danish European Mission, we want to share all that the persecuted church can teach Christian Danes. Therefore, every two weeks we will write a short blog post about a Christian point that can inspire, encourage and challenge you. This week's post is written by Michael Kofod Haahr, who is a student assistant at the Danish European Mission and a theology student.
