Nevertheless, many, even of the members of the Council, came to believe in [Jesus]. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they be excluded from the synagogue. For they loved honor from men rather than honor from God. John 12:42-43
Many came to believe in Jesus after seeing what he did and hearing what he said.
Nevertheless, some of them were more concerned with what others thought of them than with what God wanted. That's why they didn't confess their faith publicly. They were afraid of the consequences.
Most of us can recognize this, can't we? Situations where I don't mention God, the gospel or my faith because I'm unsure of the consequences. I fear - perhaps unfounded - what others will think of me. What do they think of someone who practices and articulates their Christian faith? I guess that, unfortunately, says something about how (slightly) important honor from God is to me.
The testimony of our churches and mission activities will inevitably follow. Contradictory. It is not convincing for us as churches and organizations to proclaim that it is Jesus who is Lord and Savior if our own everyday life expresses the opposite.
Put positively: When we believe in Jesus, we are part of God's mission in the world. Therefore, let us confess our faith - in words and actions. Without fearing the consequences. Because we love the glory of God.
