A mother of four was killed for her Christian faith by Islamic extremists from the al Shabaab militia on the outskirts of Mogadishu in Somalia on January 7, a relative has said.
The relative, who wished to remain anonymous, said Asha Mberwa, 36, was killed in Warbhigly village when Islamic extremists slit her throat in front of villagers who came out of their homes as witnesses. She leaves behind four children, aged 12, eight, six and four, and her husband, who was not at home when she was apprehended. Her husband, Abdinazir Mohammed Hassan, has fled to an unknown location. The relative Compass spoke to said he had called her on January 5 in an attempt to arrange the relocation of her family from the area.
Al Shabaab extremists, who control large parts of Mogadishu, had monitored the conversation and they confirm that she had become a Christian, he said. "Asha had received threats" after al Shabaab had monitored her previous conversations with him, he said. Mberwa's relative, whose whereabouts are also being withheld for security reasons, said a "Good Samaritan" in Mogadishu took care of her four children and that they are still crying and calling for their mother.
