Insufficient evidence against Christian Uighur

In China, judges in Kashgar in Xinjiang province ruled on 27.05.08 that the case of Christian Uighur, Alimjan Yimit, should be sent back to the state prosecutor due to "insufficient evidence".

He was imprisoned on 12.01.08 for "endangering national security." This was during unrest in Tibet and elsewhere in China.

Local sources say that Yimit is neither a separatist nor an anarchist. He converted from Islam to Christianity 10 years ago and became active in the growing Uyghur community.

The trial was postponed because documents had to be translated from Uyghur to Chinese.
