How are Christians harassed, discriminated against and persecuted?

The situation for Christians in India can be summarized as follows:

  • Large geographical differences: The persecution of Christians varies, with some states experiencing a certain degree of freedom of religion, while Christians and other minorities in other states are periodically targeted by extreme violence.
  • Violent attacksLately, there have been violent assaults by Hindu extremists, including killings and the burning down of hundreds of churches in Orissa (2008) and Manipur (2023).

There is great variation among the Indian states regarding the conditions for Christians and other minorities. Christians in the southern part of the country are able to practice their faith, but experience restrictions, while Christians in central and northern states can experience intense pressure. Christians in Orissa were subjected to bloody attacks in 2008 and 2009. Hindu extremists burned churches and Christians' homes, Christians were killed, and many had to flee to surrounding forests and refugee camps. In 2023, several hundred churches in Manipur were destroyed by mobs.
