Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Health is poor and the country has been plagued by several wars. Foreign forces have invaded the country and warlords within the country have fought for power. Afghanistan is also one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a Christian.
But as Christians, we don't just look at Afghanistan from the facts. We have the privilege of looking at the country from a faith perspective. In the Bible we can read what God's thoughts are and what is on his heart for people.
Paul says in the first letter to Timothy 2:1-4: I exhort then first of all to prayers and supplications, intercessions and thanksgivings for all men; pray for kings and for all in high places, that we may lead a calm and quiet life, in all godliness and reverence. It is good and acceptable in the sight of God, our Savior, who wills that all men should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
It is God's will that Afghans too can live a calm and quiet life, in all godliness and reverence - and it is His will that all Afghans be saved. From this description of God's will, we can pray for the Afghans, the authorities and the church.
In addition to praying, Danish European Mission donors have been reaching out to Afghans, both inside and outside Afghanistan, for several years.
- In eastern Turkey, support is given to a church on the route many Afghans take on their way to Europe. Here they can hear the Gospel and become part of a Christian community.
- For several years, new wills have been smuggled into Afghanistan. At the moment the work is paused, but when possible it will be resumed.
- In Iran, not only Iranians but also Afghans benefit from the thousands of copies of the New Testament smuggled into the country, thanks to support from donors of the Danish European Mission.
- In Afghanistan, poor people receive medical care.
Although the situation looks impossible, we can pray for Afghanistan - God willing - and we can make a positive difference in different ways for Afghans in need.
Thank you so much for standing with Afghans during this time.
