The Advent season has begun and preparations for Christmas can now begin. But what are we waiting for? The answer probably varies depending on who you ask. We asked a Christian woman in a closed country in Central Asia* what Christmas means to her.
What does Christmas mean to you?
Before I said yes to Jesus, I had never celebrated Christmas. This holiday was therefore new to me, and at first I was unsure of how Christmas should be celebrated and what it means. Now I know that Christmas is a holiday where we celebrate that Jesus was born and that he came close to us.
Do you have any special Christmas traditions?
Usually we celebrate the birth of Jesus in church, and children and young people put on a play. We sing Christmas carols and eat together afterwards.
At home, my family and I invite guests, bake cakes and light candles. The kids are always so excited. After we eat together, we sing a birthday song to Jesus and eat birthday cake. If we have gifts, we share them with each other, and if not, that's okay too, because Christmas is about Jesus.
We don't have the opportunity for an open and public Christmas celebration. Instead, we celebrate Christmas secretly in small groups. - And we praise God for the opportunities to celebrate him.
