Maryam, who was previously granted medical leave due to various health problems in June 2016, returned to Evin Prison in Tehran on June 27 to continue serving a four-year sentence for "acts against national security". She then began a hunger strike on July 5, 2016, demanding her immediate and unconditional release due to the inadequate treatment of her health problems. In early August, she ended the hunger strike at the urging of her family.

Maryam's health deteriorated significantly during the hunger strike. Her blood pressure dropped, she experienced pain and numbness in her feet, and experienced psychological problems as a result of her confinement.

Prison officials examined Maryam on July 20 and confirmed the seriousness of her condition in a medical report, but her request for release was rejected by an Iranian court on the orders of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS).

The prison allowed Maryam to go home on Sunday, August 28 to receive medical care. It is hoped that this time the leave will be long enough for Maryam to get the treatment she needs.

Prison sentence for becoming a Christian

Maryam, a former Muslim, has been detained since January 15, 2013 for her participation in services in underground churches in Iran, consisting of Muslims who have converted to the Christian faith. In July 2013, she was sentenced to four years in prison.

Those close to Maryam are grateful that she has been granted leave and ask for prayers:

  1. That Maryam will feel God's encouragement, strengthening and healing and receive all the treatment she needs.
  2. That God will also encourage and support Maryam's family.
  3. That Maryam can be released from prison without conditions.
  4. That God will touch the Iranian authorities and that the officials will love mercy and act justly.
