Will Aleppo soon become another Mosul?
The Syrian city of Aleppo is surrounded: Islamic State attacks from the east and the Al-Nusra Front, an offshoot of Syrian Al-Qaeda, and the FSA (Free Syrian Army) from the west.
It seems only a matter of time before Aleppo falls completely into the hands of the Islamists. It will mean a new Mosul: On June 10, 2014, the Islamic State captured the Iraqi city of Mosul and all non-Sunnis were faced with the choice: flee, die, forcibly convert to Islam or pay a high tax.
Assad gives Christians protection
Currently, the mass exodus of Christians from Aleppo towards the coastal region of Latakia continues unabated. In coastal cities like Latakia and Tartus, Syrian President Assad still has a firm grip on power and here the persecuted Christians can find protection from the Islamist rebels.
The escape corridor from Aleppo to Latakia is still open - but for how long? At the end of March 2015, there were still around 85,000 Christians in Aleppo, today less than half remain. In comparison, before the civil war began in 2011, there were around 400,000 Christians living in Aleppo. The number of Christians has thus been reduced by around 90 %.
Pray for the Christians in Syria now
The Danish European Mission supports a relief team in Aleppo that distributes emergency aid not only to Christians, but also to other displaced minorities. They ask for our prayers.
Pray that the Islamists will not prosper and that people will receive emergency aid. Pray that the lights of the church in Aleppo will not be extinguished.
It costs around DKK 680 to ensure a refugee family has food, water and medicine for a month.
