At the Danish European Mission, we are extremely grateful that we have succeeded in helping almost 3000 young girls out of poverty and oppression. In many cases, these girls have been easy targets for the horrific abuse of others. Therefore, it brings great joy every time a new sewing school opens its doors, giving new girls an education and hope for a better and safer future.

The Bilqis girl

One of the girls who has yet to receive help is Bilqis. She comes from a family where there is no money for schooling. As a result, she has had to work in a factory. One day she was abducted by the foreman who forced her to live in his house under lock and key for six months. One day he took Bilqis to a mosque and threatened to kill her and her entire family if she did not convert to Islam. Afraid for her family, Bilqis repeated the Islamic creed, which is all it takes to be called a Muslim. She also signed a marriage certificate confirming that she was now married to the foreman. But all this was against her wishes and will, and one day Bilqis managed to get away from the foreman's house and back to her parents.

New sewing schools need to get started

Danish European Mission's partner is helping Bilqis, and it is our wish that she too will soon be able to attend one of the sewing schools that we will start in her neighborhood.

Thousands of girls like Bilqis need sewing training so they can turn their harsh lives into lives of opportunity. A sewing education helps young girls secure job opportunities and an income to live on. In addition to the training itself, the girls get to live in a loving atmosphere at the sewing schools, where they also learn about God's love for them. These girls are escaping a dark past and now have a much brighter future because of the support of Christians in Denmark.

You can help us get sewing schools up and running so we can reach our 2008 goal and help more girls like Bilqis.
