The last few years have been difficult for many Sri Lankans. First there were the long lockdowns during the Corona pandemic and then the economic crisis in the country. The major societal crises turned into a personal crisis for Pastor David, who developed depression during this period. But with support and financial help to start his own business, he has regained hope.

"My name is David Jenote and I am the pastor of a church in Ginigaththana in the city of Hatton. In this area, many live below the poverty line. They are predominantly Buddhist, but by the grace of God many have come to faith in Jesus."

"The time during the Corona pandemic was very difficult for me and my family, and during the lockdowns I suffered from depression. It got even worse during the economic crisis in 2022. I trusted that God would help me through, and he did. NCEASL (Danish European Mission's partner, ed.) blessed us with an amazing opportunity. I was selected to receive training in financial management and received financial support to open a shop."

"I thank God and you for giving me this opportunity. Recently I opened the store and I am getting a small profit. Through this income I am able to help the members of the church. My wife helps me in the shop and it also gives me time to serve as a pastor and go on visits. I am eternally grateful. Thank you so much."

In 2022, 53 pastors and church workers from persecuted and marginalized backgrounds received self-help assistance. Through this support, the pastors and their families can generate an income. The project has further enabled the pastors to create job opportunities, thus helping the local community as well. The initiative can thus contribute to greater acceptance of the church in the local community.
