Meriam is now safe at the US Embassy in Sudan

Some Danish media erroneously reported that Meriam Ibrahim was not re-arrested after her release on Monday, June 23. However, Meriam and her children were detained on June 24, but were thankfully released on June 26.

Meriam and her family were detained at Khartoum airport and prevented from leaving Sudan on June 24 - the day after the Court of Appeal on June 23 overturned the death sentence she received for apostasy from Islam and fornication for marrying a Christian man.

We are pleased to announce that Meriam was released from police custody on June 26th at around 9:30am local time, after the Attorney General accepted a conditional release on bail. Meriam and her family are now at the US Embassy.

Will Meriam be accused again?

Allegations that Meriam used false travel documents and made false statements are currently under investigation. Meriam's lawyers expect to meet with the Attorney General on June 29 to hear whether she will be charged. The family had attempted to leave the country using a travel document issued by the South Sudanese embassy, as Meriam's husband is a South Sudanese citizen (he also has US citizenship). The South Sudanese embassy has confirmed the validity of the document.

There is still a possibility that the Attorney General will appeal the verdict that acquitted Meriam of apostasy when it is available in writing.

The family still needs our prayers

Christians who support the family thank us for our prayers and rejoice that Meriam has been freed once again.

They continue to ask for prayers to:

a. Meriam, Daniel, Martin and Maya need to feel Jesus' peace, presence and comfort.

b. the investigation must be concluded soon without further charges being brought against Meriam.

c. The family must be allowed to leave Sudan and experience the Holy Spirit's clear guidance for their future.

d. Christians throughout Sudan, and especially those from Muslim backgrounds, may experience the protection of the Father, the peace of the Son and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

e. All officials involved must love mercy, act justly, learn about Jesus and choose to follow Him.
