{"id":4277,"date":"2022-01-11T07:00:44","date_gmt":"2022-01-11T06:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forfulgtekristne.dk\/2022\/01\/11\/nedslag-i-afghansk-kirkehistorie\/"},"modified":"2024-04-17T11:21:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T09:21:24","slug":"insights-into-afghan-church-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forfulgtekristne.dk\/en\/2022\/01\/11\/nedslag-i-afghansk-kirkehistorie\/","title":{"rendered":"Glimpses into Afghan church history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">1st century. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Acts 2:9 tells us that on the day of Pentecost, Parthians, Medes and Elamites heard the gospel. The Parthian kingdom covers part of present-day western Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">2nd century. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the Church Father Eusebius, the Apostles Thomas and Bartholomew were sent to what is now western Afghanistan and according to tradition they were also in northern Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">5th century. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tradition refers to Herat as a bishopric in the 6th, 10th - 11th centuries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with Christian communities, mostly Nestorians. The area was on the Silk Road from China. Balkh was a mission center from which missions were sent to China and elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">13th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A Christian prince in present-day Afghanistan converted to Islam, probably for political reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">14th century. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">By this time, there were practically no Christians left in Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">17th - 18th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Christian Armenian traders settled in the Kabul area and a new Christian minority community developed. But by 1771, they were driven out of Afghanistan by Muslims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">I 1919\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">was<\/span><b><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Afghanistan gained independence from Britain and was ruled as a monarchy until 1973. After a series of military governments, a government was formed that survived with Soviet help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">I 1978<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0culminated in the Soviet invasion, which lasted a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">I 1996<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the Taliban came to power and followed a strict interpretation of Islam.Conversion to the Christian faith could result in the death penalty, imprisonment and confiscation of property.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">September 11, 2001.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The World Trade Center in New York was attacked.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Taliban falls under Western attacks on the country as punishment for the fact that Al-Qaeda, which was behind the terrorist attack, had bases in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2004: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">First democratic elections in Afghanistan. A new constitution followed, making Islam the state religion and the basis for all legislation and interpretation of laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2015: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">Danish European Mission donors begin supporting two clinics in Kabul that provide medical care to the poor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2021: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Taliban gains control of all of Afghanistan's provinces. The future is uncertain for all Afghans - especially women, dissidents and Christian converts. Before the Taliban took power, there were an estimated 3000 underground Christians in the country.
