This year marks the 10th anniversary of the outbreak of the civil war in Syria.\u00a0<\/span>During the Arab Spring in 2011, many Syrians demonstrated against the regime and called for democratic reforms. The popular protests were driven by a hope for a brighter future with greater participation and a higher standard of living. The protests grew into an uprising that was met with violence from the regime and a bloody civil war ensued, which has since evolved into a regional and global proxy war in which Iran, Russia and Turkey in particular have played a role. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today, 10 years later, the war is still not over<\/span>as there are still pockets of conflict<\/span>, tells\u00a0<\/span>the project manager for Syria<\/span>\u00a0me for a video meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"<\/span>Large parts of the country are back under the control of the Assad regime. However, the\u00a0<\/span>Idlib<\/span>-regions<\/span><\/span>occupied area<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>and that northeastern Syria is unstable.<\/span><\/span>The biggest problem right now is the humanitarian disaster Syria finds itself in<\/span>which is created on the basis of\u00a0<\/span>years of fighting that has led to a massive economic collapse in the country<\/span>.\"<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The hope that drove the protests has now been replaced by hopelessness among Syrians struggling for basic daily necessities.\u00a0<\/span>According to the UN, more than six million Syrians face<\/span>\u00a0for acute food insecurity<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Economic collapse\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

\"<\/span>In the summer of 2020, Syria experienced hyperinflation, with the Syrian currency skyrocketing. Overnight, vegetables cost a quarter of a dollar a day.<\/span>ed<\/span>el of a monthly salary.\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>angel families\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>continue to be put under massive pressure<\/span>\u00a0against the backdrop of low purchasing power, just as\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>imported goods that the country is currently so dependent on is difficult to<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0to provide<\/span>.<\/span>\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\"<\/span>The economic collapse is due to a hollowed out\u00a0<\/span>Syrian\u00a0<\/span>state budget, as a result of years of war<\/span>\u00a0which is further put under pressure by\u00a0<\/span>corona pandemic<\/span>. Additional<\/span>\u00a0sanctions against Syria have been tightened as a result of the so-called Caesar sanctions imposed by the US in June<\/span>making it harder for the regime to send money in and out of the country<\/span>. The sanctions aim to pressure the Assad regime<\/span>\u00a0back to the UN-led negotiations, but also affects the civilian population in such a way that the country is difficult to rebuild without outside help and the population is therefore trapped in poverty<\/span>as long as the regime does not want to cooperate<\/span>.<\/span>\"<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Women left behind in Syria<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

According to the UN Refugee Agency, 11 million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes since 2011. 6 million are internally displaced in Syria.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Before\u00a0<\/span>business partner<\/span>\u00a0says that young men in particular are fleeing: \"They fear\u00a0<\/span>being conscripted to war by either the regime or a rebel group. This creates a demographic imbalance, and<\/span>\u00a0Some say that<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>In Aleppo, for example, only\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>One man for every 7 women.<\/span><\/span>According to Syrian culture, women work<\/span>\u00a0typical<\/span>\u00a0not\u00a0<\/span>after starting a family, and when many men are\u00a0<\/span>fled<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>large parts of the income-generating part of the population gone<\/span>\u00a0leaving women, children and the sick in a desperate situation<\/span>\", concludes the project manager.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Emergency aid for Syria<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

  • Christians and other vulnerable people\u00a0<\/span>is allocated\u00a0<\/span>Emergency aid in the form of food, medicine, warm blankets, heaters and kerosene.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • N<\/span>island help<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0distributed by Christians in Syria.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is estimated that 500,000 people have lost their lives during the civil war in Syria.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
