The pressure to conform to Islam in all areas of life is immense. Not all families may exclude a family member who converts to the Christian faith, but due to the culture of honor and shame, the family will at least externally be under pressure to publicly distance themselves from the individual. Islam is the foundation of Afghan society, and almost all Afghans are Muslims.\n\nOfficially, there are no Christians, but a few thousand underground Christians practice their faith in secret, either with their families or in small groups with other believers. Confessing their Christian faith can cost them their lives, which is why missionary work is almost exclusively done one-on-one in confidence. However, digital media has opened up opportunities for outreach, and there are Afghans who meet Jesus through apps, TV, radio, and digital platforms.\n\nOne of Danish European Mission's contacts tells of a family where the wife became a Christian. After much consideration, she told her husband, and he was happily able to tell her that he had been a Christian for 10 years \u2013 but had been unable to tell her out of fear of being exposed.\n\nIn several other cases, however, families will experience it as shameful if a family member becomes a Christian. Especially among the young people, there is an increasing frustration with Islam, which is leading people to either be open to other religions or completely distance themselves from the belief in any God.
